‘LIVING IN HELL’: Man loses will to live as he looks at rentals in Toronto

Article content
A man looking for a new place to live in Toronto shared on social media just how meagre his options are.
Jamie Corbett, who goes by @justjamiie on Instagram, has gone viral after sharing photos and clips of some of the rentals he came across and, folks, it’s not good.
“At what point do we draw the line because we are literally living in hell right now, okay?” he asks in a lengthy video he captioned, “I need off this planet.”
The first shared room for rent he exposes is for $675 a month and the picture from the ad shows twin mattresses with only a small coffee table separating the two.
“But look at that, you get two bottles of wine and your own sleeping bag, so look at that!” he enthused sarcastically before adding, “This is a steal. Definitely recommend.”
The window, at least makes it a bright space — unlike the next room Corbett showcases, which he brands “a dungeon.”
“We have another great option here because who doesn’t like living next to a complete stranger in what looks like a dungeon, essentially?” he asks rhetorically of the significantly darker space with exposed hoses on the ceiling.
He hilarious points out it’s only $500, so another “great deal.”
As the listings continue, Corbett’s smile begins to look a little more maniacal as he shares the one bed, one bath flat for $450 a month, where the bed looks like a half-finished bunk bed from Ikea.
“I love this boho-chic, Guantanamo Bay prison-style setting here,” Corbett hypes, before urging others to snag it before someone else steals the gem.
Corbett loses it at a private room that is asking $800 a month and features a sleigh bed with what appears to be stained bedding on it.
There’s also a “Studio 1 Bath” in a townhouse that will also cost a tenant $800 a month, though the photo showcases a space where “DIY medical services” can be done.

Corbett’s last rental option is a one-bedroom apartment and shows a loft bed stuffed into the room, though he admits it “makes great use of the space.”
But he draws the line at the price.
“Only $1,350 a month for this room,” he says loudly and incredulously.
It’s not all bad news.
A recent report found that the national average asking rent in April was down year-over-year for the seventh straight month at $2,127, marking a decrease of 2.8%.
That said, average asking rents in Canada were 6.2% higher than they were two years ago.
However, real estate market experts are also saying that due to the fierce competition renters have more negotiating power nowadays.
Some Toronto landlords are even attempting to lure in tenants with rent-free months, complimentary Wi-Fi and $500 gift cards amid an unprecedented supply of condos and lower rents.
