Man, 38, turns himself in after stolen car involved in fatal St. Catharines crash

A 38-year-old man is in police custody after a stolen vehicle was involved in a deadly crash in St. Catharines earlier in the week.

Niagara Regional Police say officers responded to a car theft at a commercial plaza in the area of Scott and Niagara Sts. around 9:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

It was reported that a driver and passenger had parked a black Audi S5 in the plaza parking lot and when the driver exited to go to a nearby store, leaving the keys in the ignition with the engine running, an unidentified male opened the driver’s door.

It’s further reported the male verbally threatened the passenger who then exited the vehicle.

The carjacker then fled the area in the Audi S5 at a high rate of speed.

Around 10:20 p.m. on the same night, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Welland Ave. and Ontario St.

Upon arrival, officers determined the stolen black Audi S5 had collided with a grey Chevrolet Malibu.

The driver of the Audi S5 was observed with a head wound as he fled the scene on foot.

The driver of the grey Chevrolet Malibu, a 31-year-old St. Catharines man, was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators identified Mathew Morris, of St. Catharines, as the suspected carjacker.

On Friday night, police announced that Morris turned himself in.

Morris is facing robbery and fail to stop at the scene of a fatality charges.

Cops said the investigation remains on-going as detectives continue to work on gathering additional evidence.

Police expect further charges related to the fatality in the near future.
