Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says the stand-off began after “a person in crisis” contacted Hamilton Police around 7:30 a.m. claiming he had explosive devices and demanding a negotiator come to his residence in the area of Barton St. E. and Sherman Ave. N.
Responding officers found the man had barricaded himself inside the home.
“Police contained the residence and negotiations took place throughout the day with the barricaded man,” the SIU said in a statement.
“In the late afternoon, a drone was sent into the residence,” the SIU explained. “It revealed the man lying on the floor with blood visible around him.”
The SIU, which probes any serious injury or death involving the presence of police officers, has assigned two investigators and two forensic investigators to the case.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to call the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
