Man in 20s shot dead in Yorkdale mall parking lot

A man is dead after a shooting outside Yorkdale Shopping Centre early Thursday.

Toronto Police were called at 6:13 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of the mall in the Hwy. 401 and Dufferin Rd. area and found a man in his 20s suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man was found outside entrance No. 3 of the parking lot.

Toronto Police Det. Sajeev Nair said lifesaving measures were initiated, but the man died at the scene.

Nair said police will not be releasing further details on the victim pending next of kin notification.

“This investigation is in its early stages and we’re working to determine what happened and who is responsible,” Nair said, noting the incident “was not a random shooting.”

The suspects are still at large.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area, especially those with dash cam or cellphone footage, to come forward.

“Even the smallest piece of information can be critical to an investigation,” said Nair.

Nair asked shoppers to avoid the area on the north side around parking lot entrance No. 3 as the investigation continues. He stressed there will be increased police presence in the area in the coming days.

Yorkdale remains open for business while police continue to investigate.

The man is the city’s 21st homicide of the year.
