Man pleads guilty to break-in at retirement community in Hamilton

A man has pleaded guilty to a break-in with the intent to commit a sexual assault that occurred in a gated Hamilton retirement community last year.

Hamilton Police say a woman in her 80s was the victim of the May 9, 2024 incident in a home located in Twenty Place off of Upper James St.

“This was particularly disturbing, as this was an elderly female residing alone,” Insp. Andrea Torrie said at the time. “The offender entered her residence in the middle of the night and assaulted her.”

Torrie said the incident shook the community and upended their sense of safety.

At the time of the incident, police said they couldn’t comment on the nature of the woman’s injuries but did say the victim “sustained significant stress from the attack.”

In a news release, police said Nelson Melo, 27, of Hamilton, has pleaded guilty to the charge of break-and-enter commit – sexual assault. 

Melo is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 4.
