York Regional Police have charged a Richmond Hill man with multiple criminal and provincial offences after it’s alleged he attempted to dodge officers by racing across the GTA on a motorcycle at speeds approaching 300 km/h.
On July 4 at approximately 10:30 a.m., officers patrolling near Bloomington Rd. and Hwy. 404 in Aurora observed a black Yamaha motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed northbound on Hwy. 404.
The York Regional Police Air Support Unit was in the area and followed the motorcyclist to a gas station on Elgin Mills Rd., where it’s alleged the rider stole a quantity of gas and fled before cops arrived on the ground.
It’s alleged the motorcyclist then re-entered Hwy. 404 heading southbound, to westbound Hwy. 407, where he allegedly continued driving recklessly and was observed lane splitting, weaving through traffic and reaching speeds in excess of 200 km/h.
Cops say the motorcyclist arrived at a business on Avebury Rd. in Mississauga where he allegedly attempted to evade officers by entering the building’s underground via a man-door, with the aid of an accomplice.
Police say shortly after he allegedly left the premises in a rideshare vehicle they found the motorcycle inside the building with a counterfeit licence plate.
Officers caught up with the suspect as the rideshare arrived at his residence in Richmond Hill and Amir Hassan Monfared, 37, is charged with dangerous operation, theft under $5,000, stunt driving, use of a licence plate not authorized for a vehicle, speeding, and driving without insurance.
“There is an ongoing investigation that will determine the precise speed the suspect was travelling,” Const. Lisa Moskaluk said, explaining an officer on the ground allegedly measured the motorcycle travelling in the area of 300 km/h at one point.
“However, to confirm an exact speed for investigative and evidentiary purposes, we rely on a combination of speed-measuring tools and techniques,” she explained. “That process is still underway.”
