New charges laid in 2024 Markham rock-throwing incidents

The two accused men are 18 years old now but they were underage at the time of the incidents, so they can't be identified under the YCJA

Two men arrested last month for allegedly throwing rocks at numerous moving vehicles in 2024 – seriously injuring two people – now face additional charges stemming from two other incidents.

The two 18-year-old men, of Markham and Richmond Hill, were originally charged on July 2 with aggravated assault, mischief damage to property and mischief endangering life for incidents that occurred between Sept 20. and Nov. 30, 2024.

Ontario Provincial Police say the accused, who were underage at the time of the incidents and can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, have now each been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of mischief endangering life relating to two other incidents.

The OPP has previously said they’d received 11 separate reports of rocks being thrown at vehicles along Hwy. 48 last fall.

And that York Regional Police had also investigated nine such incidents during the same time period.

Both accused have been released and are scheduled to appear in Newmarket court at a later date.
