North York man, 75, drowns while canoeing in Kawarthas

The body of a 75-year-old North York man has been recovered one day after his canoe capsized while paddling on a lake in the Kawarthas.

OPP officers say they responded to a marine call on Balsam Lake – near Cobokonk – around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday and they were notified that a man in a canoe had gone overboard and failed to resurface.

“The City of Kawartha Lakes OPP, including members of the Marine Unit and the Emergency Response Unit, patrolled the water extensively but were unable to locate the individual before nightfall,” the OPP said in a statement.

Police said Underwater Search and Recovery Unit officers “aided in recovery measures” when the search resumed Wednesday and the senior citizen’s body was located around 1:30 p.m.

“The investigation is currently ongoing,” the OPP said.

The drowning victim’s name was not immediately released.

“With capsized vessels and falling overboard the top contributing factors in boating deaths every year, a significant number of lives stand to be saved if boaters, personal watercraft users and paddlers wore a lifejacket or personal floatation device,” the OPP added.
