One woman killed, three people injured in Brampton shooting

One woman was killed and three other people wounded when gunfire erupted in a Brampton industrial area on Saturday morning.

Peel Regional Police say officers raced to the scene after a shooter, or shooters, rolled up on a vehicle that was parked in a plaza off Rutherford Rd. S. – between Glidden and Selby Rds. – and opened fire around 6 a.m.

“What we know so far is there were six occupants in the vehicle,” Const. Richard Chin told reporters at the scene Saturday. “Now, at some point, another vehicle attended and began shooting at this parked vehicle.”

“Our officers did locate several individuals that had suffered some injuries. And, unfortunately, one of those people was pronounced deceased on scene,” he explained.

Chin said five of the occupants were women and a man was sitting behind the wheel when “multiple shots” were fired at the parked vehicle.

“The resulting gunfire and shrapnel associated with the shooting caused several injuries and the (fatality) that took place here,” he said.

One women suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene, Chin said, adding a second was rushed to a trauma centre with “serious” injuries but she was expected to survive.

A third woman and a man who was sitting in the driver’s seat were taken to hospital with “minor” injuries.

A woman working the overnight shift at a nearby towing business told CP24 she heard five to 10 shots fired in a quick succession.

And the glass doors to another nearby business were reportedly shattered by the gunfire.

Homicide detectives are handling the investigation.

No suspect description has been released and no further details were immediately available.

“The information at this point suggests that this is an isolated incident,” Chin said.

Chin was asked if there are people residing in the offices of the nearby industrial building, but he was unable to confirm that information.

“We are in the very preliminary stages of this investigation,” he pointed out.
