Toronto, Peel top docs urge delay in lifting restrictions until March 9

TORONTO — The top doctors for Ontario’s two largest COVID-19 hot spots are asking the province to keep a stay-at-home order and other restrictions in place for their regions for two more weeks.
The medical officers of health for Toronto and Peel Region made the request in a letter to Ontario’s chief medical officer.
Dr. Eileen de Villa says it is her recommendation that Toronto remain under its current restrictions until March 9 because of the presence of variants of COVID-19 in Toronto.
Her counterpart in Peel, Dr. Lawrence Loh, says that while cases have dropped, he would also like to see the strict measures that are currently in place remain for two more weeks.
Ontario is set to lift the stay-home order for Peel, Toronto, York Region and North Bay next week as it moves the regions back into its pandemic restrictions framework.

Ontario has said it will consult with all of the medical officers of health in each region before deciding where a community will placed in the tiered framework.
Health Minister Christine Elliott has said that no decisions have been made regarding the gradual reopening of the hot spots.
Ontario reported 847 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday and 10 more deaths related to the virus.
