An attempt to stop a reported stolen car led to a police-involved shooting in Scarborough on Thursday evening.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit says York Regional Police officers attempted to stop the driver of a car reported stolen as it travelled in the Kennedy Rd. and Steeles Ave. E. area of Markham around 6:55 p.m.
The driver did not stop and officers boxed the car in, with “the driver colliding with police vehicles before stopping in the area of Kennedy Rd. and Bonis Ave. in Scarborough.”
“One officer discharged their firearm at the man, the sole occupant of the vehicle,” the SIU said.
The 30-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Four investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist have been assigned to the case.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
