Street, TTC service resumes after Kensington Market building evacuation

City officials on Saturday said a street had re-opened and TTC service had resumed after a two-storey building in Kensington Market was earlier evacuated and deemed unsafe and in danger of collapsing.

Toronto Fire crews said on Friday 10 people were evacuated from the commercial/residential building along Dundas St. W. at Augusta Ave. after witnesses saw portions of the building move.

The building, located at 606 Dundas St. W., is home to the Levol Convenience store and Super Star Salon.

Emergency crews noted the front facade and roof of the building separating from the rest of the structure, which fire crews say is in danger of falling to the street below.

Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop told reporters the building suffered a partial collapse.

Dundas St. remained closed between August Ave. and Dennison Ave., impacting traffic and TTC streetcar service.

On Saturday, the city said on social-media site X that “the contractor has completed the removal of the unsafe structure, however, further assessment of the remaining structure is required before it can be deemed safe.”

Foot traffic will be diverted from the sidewalk adjacent to the building, city officials said on social media, but Dundas St. W. has been re-opened and TTC service has resumed.
