TikTok user bbgrill shared a listing on Facebook Marketplace of a “private bedroom for rent” in Hamilton.
“Surely this is not legal,” she says as she takes an online tour of the ad’s photos, adding that the private room is actually an unfinished basement with someone’s furniture, personal items and dog in the space.
It “definitely does not look like there is enough height,” she says of the low ceilings.
“We are off to a grim start,” she continued, highlighting the “exposed pipes” and “sh***y foam ceiling that you find in schools.”

The TikToker points out the “makeshift bathroom” has painters’ tape around a light fixture and cabinet and sarcastically notes the “great patch jobs” on one wall. There are wobbly, warped ceilings in another area.
She snorted as she revealed the monthly rate: $1,050 — which doesn’t include parking or air-conditioning.
Those luxuries are each $50 extra per month, bringing the monthly rate to $1,150.
The description of the ad doesn’t lie, explaining the basement room and private bathroom are “NOT furnished.”
It also includes laundry, basic internet, heat, hydro and water, while the shared spaces include the kitchen, living areas, backyard and barbecue.
The rental, in the “beautiful Rosedale area,” is also close to trails, swimming, skating and the Red Hill.

But perhaps those with allergies to canines may want to look elsewhere as a “large friendly dog” also lives in the home.
Many commented how the basement is illegal due to the drop ceilings, however many defended the listing.
“It’s better than the street!” one person commented, while another added: “I’ve seen a lot worse for a lot more.”
A third added: “It’s a horrible place to live, but on the other hand, there are people who are on the verge of being homeless who would appreciate this place.”
