A 17-year-old cyclist faces charges after colliding with a vehicle while not wearing a helmet in Vaughan on Tuesday.

York Regional Police say officers responded to the collision at Beverley Glen Blvd. and Dufferin St. – north of Centre St. – around 3 p.m.

“When police arrived, they observed a white vehicle in the right-turn lane of northbound Dufferin St. and a damaged bicycle nearby,” Const. Lisa Moskaluk said in a statement released Wednesday. “The cyclist, a youth, was being treated by paramedics on scene.”

“Police learned the cyclist had been riding southbound in the northbound lanes and was not wearing a helmet when the impact occurred.”

Moskaluk said the cyclist, who suffered minor injuries, was charged with careless driving and operating a bicycle while not wearing a helmet

The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

“Under the Highway Traffic Act, cyclists are subject to the same rules and responsibilities as motorists,” Moskaluk said.

To stay safe, police are reminding cyclists to:

– Ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic signals and signs;

– Always wear a helmet, which is required by law for anyone under the age of 18;

– Use proper hand signals when turning or stopping;

– Equip bicycles with a working bell or horn and use lights and reflectors at night;

– Stay visible and predictable to other road users.
