Peel Regional Police claim the liquor theft — an ongoing problem at LCBO stores, where staff have been directed not to engage those who walkout without paying — occurred in the area of Dundas St. and Mavis Rd.
“(A man allegedly) placed several bottles of alcohol in a duffle bag and immediately exited the store without any attempts to pay,” police said in a statement released Tuesday.
Cops say LCBO employees notified police and officers were dispatched to the store — something Toronto Police Service no longer do unless the suspect remains on site or there is a threat to public safety.
The Peel officers located a suspect in a taxi not far from where the theft allegedly occurred.
Ahmed Ahmed, of no fixed address, was charged with five counts of theft under $5000, 16 counts of breaching a probation order and four counts of breaching a recognizance order.
Police say the accused man was also wanted on three outstanding arrest warrants.
