Toronto realtor Anya Ettinger, who goes by “aserealty” on social media, had her mind blown when she was shown a listing for a “shared bedroom in a lake-facing downtown condo.”
Sure, the “shared bedroom” component is questionable, but the tenant (not the landlord, Ettinger suspected) wasn’t fully clear in the listing title — but elaborated in the description itself.
“Just when you thought the Toronto rental market couldn’t get any worse, it did,” Ettinger says on her TikTok post, which she also shared on Instagram.
“I present to you: ‘Shared bedroom in a lake-facing downtown condo’ for $900 a month.”
All of which sounds OK until Ettinger continues to read the listing, which also appears in the background of her post.

“Looking for an easygoing female to share the master bedroom and the one queen-size bed,” the listing says.
“I have been previously sharing the bedroom which only has one queen-size with [a] roommate I found on Facebook and it worked out perfectly well!”
It is unclear if the listing was posted by a man or woman.
Needless to say, Ettinger couldn’t believe it.
“$900 a month to share a queen — not even a king, where you can comfortably put a pillow barrier — but a queen-size bed, with someone who’s not your partner.”
Ettinger even tried to figure out the logistics of it all, to no avail.
“Like, how does that work? Do you just go to bed and you’re like, ‘Goodnight roomie,’ and you just roll over?”
There’s even more to the ad, which has since been removed from Facebook Marketplace, that Ettinger doesn’t even discuss, including the “flexible” move-in date that begins Jan. 2, “preferably for a year,” so the bed-sharer can be added to the lease.

A $1,900 deposit is also required to cover first and last month’s rent and the cost of fob keys.
Also, required is identification or a Canadian visa or residency proof, along with payslips and proof of employment and, of course, a background check.
Ettinger suggested the potential tenant “invest in two twin beds and put them in the room and just rent out the room?”
She concluded: “Like, I have never… this is so unhinged. Renting out a space in your bed for $900 a month? No wonder so many people hate it here.”
