Toronto woman severely injured after driving ATV off cliff

Emergency personnel airlifted a severly-injured Toronto woman to a hospital after she drove an ATV off a cliff in Durham Region.

Firefighters had to rappell down a steep cliff Saturday to reach the 39-year-old woman who plunged over a the edge of an incline near Lakeshore Rd. in Clarington. The four-wheeler landed upside down and ended up eight metres below the surface of Lake Ontario.

Police said she is expected to survive the ordeal.

Police suspect that a mechanical malfuntion is to blame for the mishap. Members of the Durham Regional Police marine unit raised the ATV from the lake for further investigation.
