Toronto's Lights Out campaign begins to protect migratory birds from building collisions

The City of Toronto is moving to save some of the estimated 25 million birds that are killed in Canada each year when they fly into lit building windows at night.
The city on Tuesday kicked off its Lights Out Toronto spring campaign, from April 1-May 31, to protect migratory birds.
The arrival of warmer weather signals the start of an annual migration season that sees millions of birds pass through Toronto.
The campaign encourages building owners to:
— Turn off interior lighting at night, especially on higher floors
— Close window coverings at night if lights must be kept on
— Turn off exterior decorative lighting, pot lights and flood lights when not in use
— Substitute strobe lighting and reduce atrium lighting whenever possible
— Install automatic motion sensors and controls wherever possible.
