Wainwright RCMP called to a disturbance at a home in the town, about 200 km southeast of Edmonton, at 11:54 p.m. last Friday, were told that the two stabbing victims, aged 21 and 24, had been taken to hospital, police said in a news release.

Both victims were treated and have been released from hospital, Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, acting Alberta RCMP media relations manager, said Tuesday.

Both are members of the Canadian Armed Forces based at CFB Wainwright.

Officers called to the home located and arrested a man who has since been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, said RCMP.

Savinkoff didn’t believe the suspect was known to the victims prior to the attack, and the suspect was not known to the RCMP.

“Despite these initial charges, the investigation into this incident continues,” Savinkoff said.

“There was a large gathering at the residence. These charges are just one part of an ongoing investigation. We are still investigating other potential incidents that occurred at that residence on that event,” Savinkoff said.

The suspect’s name won’t be released until charges are sworn.

He was released on an undertaking and expected to appear in court in Wainwright on Sept. 18.

Armed Forces spokeswoman Lt.-Col. Lena Angell, meanwhile, told Postmedia that three junior military members were involved in a brawl with a civilian.

She said the two injured were treated in hospital in Wainwright and one of them was later sent to Edmonton for more specialized care.

Angell added that several other military members saw the fight and the Armed Forces will fully co-operate with the RCMP investigation.

“All CAF members are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism; any incident of misconduct (is) thoroughly investigated and addressed through appropriate administrative or disciplinary measures,” Angell said in an emailed statement.
