York Regional Police are investigating a brazen daylight smash-and-grab robbery at a Richmond Hill jewelry store on Monday afternoon that was captured by bystander video and posted online.
“A commercial robbery did occur at a jewelry store in the area of Yonge St. and 16th Ave. in Richmond Hill, ” Const. Kevin Nebrija told the Toronto Sun on Tuesday morning.
“Information is that four males, all wearing masks and medical gloves, entered the store and began smashing the glass display cases with hammers before fleeing with a quantity of jewelry.
“One employee did sustain minor injuries and was assessed by paramedics.”
Video posted to social media shows the males in the Peoples Jewellers location in Hillcrest Mall smashing the display cases and stealing while being filmed and watched.
Screams can be heard as glass is smashed and a woman on the floor at an office door, believed to be an employee, screams in distress something about a safe.
A man can be heard calling the police several times and he mocks the robbers as they run away with the loot, calling them losers and telling them to get a job.
The videographer chases them as they run out of the mall and films them getting into a waiting vehicle — a black Nissan Ultima XR — and captures the licence plate, reading it out loud — CCE V102 — before it drove off.
Anyone with information is asked to contact York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
