WARMINGTON: Family says arrest made in Whitby jogger's violent attack

People close to a Whitby woman who was attacked and left for dead two weeks ago say police have told them an arrest has been made in her attempted murder.
While Durham Regional Police have not confirmed the arrest, they have put out a news release indicating they will be holding an outdoor press conference Friday morning to provide an update on the investigation into the assault of the Whitby woman who was found with life-threatening injuries on July 29.

Family have been told police will reveal an arrest has been made in the horrible crime but they have indicated that is all they know.
What is known is that the 50-year-old was viciously beaten and left for dead in a creek along Anderson St., near Taunton Rd., where she was found by a Durham search team.
She was unconscious and received major injuries to her face and other parts of her body and family believe the attacker’s intention was for her to die there. She was reported missing by her husband and her son about 12 hours before she was found.
The victim was out for her regular exercise when the incident occurred. Police have never indicated if it was a random attack or if she was targeted. What police did do is release a video showing a man about 150 feet behind her, following along along the sidewalk. They called this man a person of interest.
It was unclear if this man is considered to be a suspect or a potential witness in the heinous crime.
A clearer picture should emerge once police brief the media outside at the DRPS Regional Reporting Centre, 650 Rossland Rd. E. in Whitby.
Chief Paul Martin, lead investigator Det. Gill Lock, Major Crime acting Insp. Stefanie Finateri and Det.-Sgt. Dean Roy will be on hand to address the media.

Sources say the police have worked tirelessly on this case and have thrown every resource available at it. I will also definitely be recommending awards of commendation for the officers who found her and saved her life. They really are heroes there. Sources tell me that while it was touch and go for the first 10 days, she is starting to respond to treatment, is conscious again and has been able to receive visits from her husband and son.
This may very well turn out to be a miracle. More than $105,000 has been raised to help with her recovery and her family is also planning an event for Cobourg on Aug. 22. But the news the whole GTA has been waiting to learn will be revealed before 10 a.m.
On this Friday, deep into a difficult pandemic summer of 2020, police are expected to announce who they allege was behind this attack.
And perhaps cops will shed some light on just how they were able to crack the case.
