Warning to realtors: No open houses

Real estate agents across the province are being urged to forget about hosting open houses while the Coronavirus threat escalates.

The Ontario Real Estate Association issued the call to all Ontario realtors, as did the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board (TRREB).

Both associations are suggesting video and virtual tours be used to promote homes and other properties on the market in an attempt to avoid the possibility of attracting large groups to open houses.

“While open houses are a common real estate practice that help sellers achieve good value for their homes and educate potential buyers about a property, these factors are secondary to protecting the health of Ontarians and limiting the spread of COVID-19,” OREA said in a statement.

TREBB president Michael Collins said Sunday that his organization has been consistent in cautioning against open houses during the past few weeks but as the cases have grown in Toronto, it became important to issue the message in a “little stronger” way.

He said although they “strongly recommend” open houses not be held, whether to schedule them is ultimately a broker and client decision.

However, open houses will not be listed on the multiple listing service (MLS) for the time being.

Collins said he noticed a few were held this past weekend, but added several advertised open houses were cancelled.

“For most of our members they’ve heard this and are not going through with them (open houses),” he said. “They’re a danger for them too.”

TRREB represents 56,000 realtors in the Toronto region.
