York cops warn about fake speed camera ticket scam

Residents of York Region are being warned about a text message scam involving fake speed camera tickets.

York Regional Police say fraudsters have been sending text messages claiming recipients must click on a link to pay outstanding speed camera fines.

“These messages often appear urgent and may look official, but they are designed to steal personal and financial information,” Const. James Dickson said in a statement released Wednesday.

He reminded the public that “all legitimate traffic tickets, speed camera tickets and payment instructions are sent through the mail.”

“York Regional Police or any government agency will never demand payment via text message,” Dickson explained. “To protect yourself, do not click on links or download attachments from unexpected text messages.”

“Ignore any texts claiming to be ticket payment requests and always wait for official mail notifications regarding traffic violations,” he advised.
