Canadian vets prepared to handle pet care during COVID-19 pandemic

At a time when many people are concerned about emergency healthcare services, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association wants to assure pet owners that veterinarians are prepared to handle medical services for animals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are seen as an essential service,” said Dr. Ian Sandler, of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association, a group that represents over 12,000 veterinarians in Canada.

“Whether it be commercial feed lots or pets, we can help with the facilitation of medical and essential services,” Sandler said, adding pet owners can rest assured that its members are taking the necessary precautions and are admitting patients on a one-on-one basis.

According to Sandler, many vets are looking at postponing routine or elective surgeries for at least two weeks, but he advises pet owners to speak directly with their veterinarian.

With regards to medication for pets, Sandler said there doesn’t appear to be a short supply in Canada. “Clinics should still be getting their orders in,” Sandler said.

Just like humans, pets who require medication should have a two-week supply at home.

“I don’t know of any vets that have closed yet, but there are different types of practices and different ways of delivering emergency medial services,” Sandler said. “Many could be equipped to handle services over the phone.”
