As reported by Blacklock’s Reporter, Senators Joseph Day of New Brunswick, James Munson of Ontario, Victor Oh of Ontario, and retired New Democrat MP Irene Mathyssen attended an overseas “Canada-China friendship” meeting with Chinese officials in Bangkok on Aug. 27.
“The purpose of this meeting was to maintain an open dialogue between Canada and China despite the current turbulence in the relationship,” a report by the Canada-China Legislative Association stated.
“There was recognition on both sides that China and Canada can learn from each other,” the report stated.
The meeting supposedly did not mention the Hong Kong protests going on at the time and talks continued despite two Canadians, Michael Spavor’s and Michael Korvig’s, currently sitting in a Chinese jail after being imprisoned more than a year ago.

According to the report: “The meeting also allowed Canada to reiterate some of its positions and express how the current situation is complicating public opinion.”
“According to the delegates as well as the Chinese representatives, both countries have a long relationship that has been productive in many respects,” the report stated.
The price tag for the meeting reportedly cost $52,066.
Delegates at the meeting reportedly agreed the two sides should meet in Ottawa in 2020 as it “would be a good opportunity between Canada and China and will help maintain diplomatic relations between the two countries.”
