Liberal Leader Mark Carney named the wrong school when championing his candidate Nathalie Provost, a gun-control activist and survivor of the Polytechnique massacre who he also misnamed, at a news conference in Nova Scotia Tuesday afternoon.

In an online video, Carney is seen saying in French, “You want defenders of social justice, like Nathalie Pronovost of Montreal,” adding an extra syllable to Provost’s last name.

He went on to repeat the wrong surname, and misnamed the site of the tragic mass shooting that took place at Polytechnique Montréal in 1989, claiming the lives of 14 women.

“Nathalie Pronovost, who out of the shootings at Concordia, became a social justice activist.”

Carney called Provost to apologize after the incident, according to Liberal communications officer Guillaume Bertrand.

“I spoke to the candidate for Chateauguay—Les Jardins-de-Napierville this afternoon for what was clearly a slip earlier today. My respect and gratitude toward Nathalie Provost, for her commitment to our country in this critical time,” Carney wrote in a statement.
