OTTAWA — The abortion issue will not be re-opened under a Conservative government.
Speaking to reporters Friday morning in St. Catherines, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said a woman’s right to choose was established in Canada long ago, and he has no interest in resurrecting it.
“I can guarantee you there will be no laws restricting abortion passed when I’m prime minister,” he said.
“For 20 years, the policy of the Conservative party has been that there will be no restrictions brought in on a woman’s right to choose.”
That policy, he said, was adopted by party members in 2004 and upheld at subsequent party conventions.
“There will be no laws or other restrictions imposed on a woman’s right to decide to do with her body as she wishes, and this is something that I’m guaranteeing for you and all Canadians.”
That policy, Poilievre said, will be reiterated in his party’s 2025 election platform.
