Political leaders duke it out at French-language debate

Canada’s political leaders explained their vision for the country in the only French-language debate of the 2025 federal election.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet are in Montreal on Wednesday for the debate, which begins at 6 p.m. EDT.

However, Green Party co-leader Jonathan Pedneault was disinvited by the Leaders’ Debate Commission earlier Wednesday due to the party’s decision to not run candidates in safe Conservative ridings.

The debate will be moderated by Radio-Canada’s Patrice Roy and focus on the cost of living, energy and climate, the trade war, identity and sovereignty, and immigration and foreign affairs.

The English-language debate is set to take place on Thursday.
