That’s how Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on Thursday described U.S. President Donald Trump’s sudden reversal of many of his previously announced tariffs — announcing a 90-day reprieve on most of the nations that conspicuously left out Canada.

“I condemn President Trump for keeping the tariffs on Canada, all while offering a 90-day pause on tariffs of dozens of other countries,” Poilievre said Thursday during a campaign stop in Milton.

“It remains a mystery why the President treats Canada worse than dozens of other faraway countries who are not America’s best friend.”

Confusion over the reversal reigned on Wednesday after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that Canada and Mexico would be spared, but later reversed course by staying Canada’s tariffs would remain as-is.

Poilievre also took aim at Liberal Leader Mark Carney, who bafflingly described the situation as a “welcome reprieve,” despite the U.S. tariffs on Canada remaining unchanged.

“There are more American tariffs on Canada today then there were when Prime Minister Carney took office, while dozens of other countries have secured pauses,” Poilievre said.

“(Carney) does not control President Trump, no one does. What we do control is what we do here in Canada, and we know what we need to do in this country, and that is to reverse the Liberal policies that Mark Carney advised Trudeau to do, and that every present Liberal candidate and MP supported and helped put into place — the policies that have driven away our jobs and weakened our economy.”
