The horrors were met with little more than a shrug.

Certainly, there was no condemnation or outrage. And there was absolutely zero virtue signalling.

Instead, the latest violent mayhem on the streets of Canada has been met with indifference. But let’s look at root causes, right?

None of the party leaders has mentioned these crimes. They have been silent. Maybe the daily outrages have ground them down like a pencil as much as they have the hoi polloi.

In Vancouver, over the past week, two incidents jumped out that once would have merited explicit rage. No more.

A 92-year-old man (92!) died of his injuries in the hospital after being battered in a Chinatown alley in March. The victim—whose name has not been released—was attacked by several thugs.

The elderly Chinatown resident was found by paramedics in medical distress on March 18. Cops announced over the weekend that he died on March 31.

Cops say so far, three suspects have been identified, but there have been no arrests. A Vancouver police force spokeswoman noted that the victim had been “assaulted by multiple people before his death.”

Keep these factoids in mind: 92 years old and multiple attackers.

One frightened area resident told Posmtedia: “It’s hard to deny that things are increasingly unsafe. I’ve seen violent attacks right outside my building, witnessed people die in broad daylight, with dozens of people around, and even been caught in an altercation where I was pepper-sprayed.”

It is “very hard to deny,” but politicians, academics, activists, advocates and Charter fan boys will certainly do their utmost to play blind man.

It was also “very hard to deny” that a frequent flier on the local police blotter has been accused of trying to set two Vancouver cops ablaze last Thursday.

In that city’s hardscrabble Downtown Eastside neighbourhood last Thursday, two beat cops were on foot patrol when they attempted to detain a man for jaywalking, according to Vancouver police. The suspect allegedly was not having it and attempted to flee.

As the cops were about to cuff the man, he allegedly used some sort of flammable liquid to set the officers’ uniforms on fire before fleeing, according to police. The officers were able to put the fires out themselves with one sustaining injuries that had to be treated in the hospital.

Not far away, cops pinched Jordan Mutual, 40.

According to Postmedia, Mutual was wanted B.C.-wide for at least 10 different offences. Now, Mutual has been charged with one count of assaulting a police officer and one count of obstructing a police officer. Mutual remains in custody until his next court date. The allegations have been tested in court.

According to Global News, citing court records, since 2022, Mutual has been through the revolving door of Vancouver jails on different charges. The charges are still before the courts.

— July 31, 2022: Mutual was accused of possessing a loaded, prohibited or restricted firearm, possessing a firearm without a licence or registration, and possessing a weapon – a firearm – for a dangerous purpose.

— Sept. 13, 2022: Charged with assault by choking, assault, two counts of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possessing a firearm without a licence or registration, careless use or storage of a firearm, and … breach of undertaking in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident.

— Nov. 17, 2022: Mutual was accused of breaching his release order … TWICE. And there’s more….

— May 3, 2024: He was released on $1,000 bail with 14 conditions.

— March 25, 2025: A warrant issued for two alleged breaches of his release order. Police said he failed to appear for the 2022 gun case.

— Feb. 17, 2020:  Mutual was arrested for another alleged breach.

As the Downtown Eastside resident noted, “It is very hard to deny.”
