Most Canadians believe hockey is core to Canada's national identity: Survey

In Canada, hockey remains king.
A new Rogers survey says Canadian pride will burst if Canada beats the U.S. in Thursday night’s NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off final.
The poll found that more than three-quarters, or 78%, of Canadians believe hockey is core to Canada’s national identity and 75% say that Canada’s national pride is deeply intertwined with the sport.
The survey also says roughly 60% of Canadians who are aware of the tournament say a Canada victory would be even more meaningful given the threats to Canada’s economy and economic sovereignty through U.S. tariffs.
Four in 10 say a victory will increase their pride in Canada, the results found.
The 2025 4 Nations Face-Off is an international best-on-best tournament featuring the NHL’s top players from Canada, the U.S., Finland and Sweden. Rogers is the sponsor of Canada’s team.
Saturday’s game between Team Canada and Team USA saw more than nine million Canadians tune in to watch.
In that matchup, the U.S. beat Canada 3-1 and was punctuated by Canadians booing the U.S. anthem before the action began and three fights in the first nine seconds.
