A cybersecurity incident shut down data systems associated with The Weather Network and MeteoMedia websites and mobile apps for several hours on Tuesday, leaving millions of Canadians in the dark when it came to their preferred source for weather reporting.

App users were unable to access local forecasts on Tuesday morning and into the afternoon with the media company, owned by Pelmorex Corp., saying on the social-media site X (formerly known as Twitter) that it had been affected by a cyberattack associated with a third-party service provider and that their teams were working to restore services as soon as possible.
The Weather Network website and app were partly operational as of Tuesday evening with the cyberattack affecting The Weather Network and MeteoMedia weather data systems only, the company said in a news release.

Pelmorex Corp. has confirmed it has been impacted by a cybersecurity incident connected to a third-party software provider. This has affected The Weather Network and MétéoMédia weather data systems only. Alert Ready capabilities are not impacted and continue to work as intended.…
“Alert Ready capabilities are not impacted and continue to work as intended,” The Weather Network said on X at 6:08 p.m. “Cybersecurity experts have been engaged and the investigation is ongoing.
“Canadians can expect some of our services up and running in the next few hours with full restoration as soon as possible. Relevant authorities have been notified about the incident. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience that this incident may have caused.”
The Weather Network app is one of the most popular in Canada with more than 10 million people downloading it on Google Play alone. It was also one of the most popular apps globally on the Apple App Store in 2017 with a digital reach of 16.2 million Canadians, according to a news release on the Pelmorex website.
In the meantime, weather forecasts can be found on the Environment Canada website at weather.gc.ca.
