OTTAWA — Newly-released documents reveal thousands of managers and high-ranking staff employed by CBC make more than $100,000 per year in total compensation.

The documents, requested by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation via an access-to-information request, consist of 64 pages of CBC employees who earned over six-figures in 2024 — 2,884 employees in all.

“Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for an office full of middle managers pretending to be reporters,” said Kris Sims, the federation’s Alberta director and a former Parliament Hill journalist.

“The government should stop giving taxpayers’ money to the CBC and force the broadcaster to raise money on its own merits from willing donors and subscribers.”

The data provided lists of those whose taxable income was over $100,000, and it doesn’t account for any bonuses, benefits or performance pay that would put a particular employee over that benchmark.

While all salaries and most of the names were redacted, the names of many senior managers with the broadcaster were left intact.

Job titles range from manager, senior manager and executive producer to more rank-and-file television positions like directors, producers, switcher/directors, videographers and reporters.

Previously-released documents put CBC‘s total employment at 7,211 — with 1,831 of them earning six-figure salaries, before benefits and bonuses.

That represents an over 300% increase from a decade ago, when only 438 CBC employees had six-figure salaries.

A 2023 National Post article reported that number was 949 in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

Remuneration has become a nagging issue for the national broadcaster, with senior executives taking home hefty performance pay bonuses while laying off workers and eliminating vacancies to balance the books.

CBC announced in May they were ending their “individual performance pay” program, but ended up handing out $37.7 million in raises to 6,295 employees.
