The U.S. President is set to meet Canada’s freshly elected prime minister at the White House on Tuesday for the first meeting between both leaders.

And it appears that Trump wants to know why his country is “subsidizing” Canada to the tune of $200 billion a year.

“I look forward to meeting the new Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform ahead of the high stakes meeting.

“I very much want to work with him, but cannot understand one simple TRUTH — Why is America subsidizing Canada by $200 Billion Dollars a year, in addition to giving them FREE Military Protection, and many other things?”

Trump appears to be talking about the trade deficit between both countries.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, the U.S. goods trade deficit with Canada was US$63.3 billion in 2024. Total goods trade with Canada was an estimated US$762.1 billion.

Trump continued, saying the U.S. doesn’t need goods and raw material from its northern neighbour.

“We don’t need their Cars, we don’t need their Energy, we don’t need their Lumber, we don’t need ANYTHING they have, other than their friendship, which hopefully we will always maintain,” he wrote.

Trump didn’t mention talk of Canada becoming the 51st state or annexation, which he has reiterated over the last few days.

“The Prime Minister will be arriving shortly and that will be, most likely, my only question of consequence,” Trump added.
