Company with Toronto-Niagara hovercraft route plan secures docking deal

An Ontario company aiming to create what is says is North America’s first large-scale hovercraft transit route – from Toronto to Niagara – is hoping to make more waves after securing a docking agreement.

Hoverlink Ontario Inc. says it has finalized an agreement with Toronto’s port authority to secure its landing in the western gap of Toronto’s harbour at Billy Bishop Airport.

The company said that while the service is still in its planning stages, its Niagara site is already “shovel-ready.” Upon completion, the marine hovercraft high-speed ferry service would connect downtown Toronto and Niagara Region by way of Lake Ontario in “just 30 minutes,” significantly cutting travels times compared to car and train options.

“This high-speed service is designed to be a dependable, low-emission alternative to the congested QEW corridor,” Hoverlink said in a news release.

The company said it is still in the planning stages and its maiden voyage could be at least three years away, but its addition would be game-changing.

“Hoverlink’s rapid transit service is a transformative step forward – unlocking tourism growth, accelerating economic development, and finally delivering the high-speed waterfront connection Toronto and Niagara have long needed,” Hoverlink’s President Erika Potrz said in a news release.

“Toronto and the Niagara Region are about to get a whole lot closer. We are extremely pleased to finally have the opportunity to provide a fast, reliable and sustainable transportation solution that connects tourists and commuters in only 30 minutes. It truly is connectivity without congestion,” Hoverlink founder and CEO Chris Morgan added.

Hovercrafts have been around for at least five decades. They use fans to create a cushion of air beneath their hull while a separate propeller provides thrust, allowing them to glide over water or land.
