Police in Sudbury have seized more than $1.9 million worth of illicit drugs and four firearms, and charged 25 people — 16 of whom are from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area — with a combined 197 charges.

The 16-month probe dubbed Project Saturate, involving officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the OPP, investigated drug trafficking in Greater Sudbury and surrounding area.
Cops identified two street gangs based in the GTA involved in trafficking of controlled substances, including fentanyl and cocaine, to northeastern Ontario.
On May 8, six search warrants were executed in Sudbury, Mississauga and Hamilton and on May 29, an additional 14 search warrants were executed in Sudbury, Mississauga, Richmond Hill, Pickering and Toronto.
Twenty-two individuals were arrested and arrest warrants have been issued for three more suspects — Alijah Adams, 22, and Jojuan Allen, 22, of no fixed address, and O’Neil Richardson, 24, of Toronto.

More than seven kilograms of suspected fentanyl and 12 kilos of suspected cocaine were seized along with the four firearms.
In addition, officers also seized 164 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 2,448 oxycodone tablets, 1,010 suspected methamphetamine tablets, other prescription medications, eight kilograms of cannabis, two prohibited devices, $259,000 in Canadian currency $1,210 in U.S. currency, 21 cellphones, two laptops, digital scales, one vehicle as offence-related property, and one boat as proceeds of crime.

“This quantity of drugs seized in a community like Sudbury is significant,” OPP Acting Det. Supt. Andy Bradford, with the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, said in a statement.

“We also seized four firearms, which supports notion that the presence of street gangs brings the potential for gun violence.
“The OPP will continue to work with our municipal partners like the Greater Sudbury Police Service to stem the flow of illegal drugs and firearms and dismantle the criminal networks and street gangs that have proliferated in these communities.”

“Illicit drugs pose a serious threat to the safety, security and overall wellness of our community,” Sudbury Police Chief Sara Cunningham said in a statement.
“This significant seizure is a clear example of the harm caused by organized crime and the importance of taking decisive action.”
