HUNTER: Death comes calling for rapist who preyed on elderly women

Article content
There wasn’t a lot you could do with rapist Andre Taillefer.
According to notes from a psychiatrist and staff at the Royal Ottawa Hospital in the summer of 2011, he was hard-wired for evil, believing in his twisted heart he was a tough guy with prison-yard fighting prowess. Born with a short fuse, he also had an odd notion that he was a ladies’ man.
As long as his victims were the elderly women he raped or terrorized in his hometown of Alexandria, Ont., east of Ottawa, he was fine.
But for Taillefer, the clock was ticking. On July 17 at Lindsay’s superjail, the clock struck midnight. And in the end, he probably got what he deserved, although God reserves the right of first refusal on that call.
Kawartha Lakes police said guards found the old rape hound seriously injured in his jail cell. He was later airlifted to Kingston General Hospital.
On July 22, Taillefer pegged out, succumbing to his injuries. Next stop: Morgue.
Two fellow jailbirds were charged with first-degree murder. Hunter Owen, 28, of Newmarket is back in court April 17 to confirm trial date.
Charges against Jason Larocque, 34, of Oshawa were dropped in December.
What preceded the murder is not known. None of the charges have been proven in court.
Taillefer was 58 and will not see another sunset. He leaves behind a criminal record that’s long and varied, from inconsequential to heartbreakingly violent.
“He always seems to be in trouble,” neighbour Peter Pidgeon told the Ottawa Sun in 2000. “This guy was always into drugs and it must have done something to his head.”
— Taillefer kicked things off when he was about 18 with a slew of break-and-enters around Alexandria.
— In 1993, he was jailed for nine months after he stole a garbage truck and rampaged through a cemetery smashing tombstones.
— Next, in 2001, he was sentenced to eight years in prison for raping and assaulting a 76-year-old woman as her ailing husband slept. He was on probation at the time.
— Not long out of the slammer, he was caged for another nine months for being unlawfully in the home of another elderly woman. He had “verbally expressed his affections.” That was 2008.
— In 2011, Taillefer was hit with another 21 months for a similar incident. A senior came home and found him sitting naked on her bed and asking for sex.

A headshrinker once proclaimed that he was at “very high risk” to reoffend violently and likely sexually.
Long jolts in jail didn’t move the needle for the boozehound. In eight years at the now-closed Victorian hellhole called Kingston Penitentiary, he refused treatment and struggled to come to terms with his violent actions.
Even bars didn’t deter Taillefer as court heard in 2015 that he harassed one elderly woman from prison with a slew of lurid letters — 104 in all.
In 2016, the Crown wanted him declared a dangerous offender. The judge opted instead for a long-term offender designation — and banishment from his hometown of Alexandria.
Even the judge in his case noted that Taillefer didn’t really have a release plan, but did bizarrely have a supportive girlfriend. Her presence in his life did not deter his sexual pursuit of older women.
As for Taillefer getting a job, well, he said he didn’t see the need.
Taillefer is now officially retired.
But there is no gold watch or alumni day. There is only pitch-black oblivion.
Our civilized selves believe his alleged murder was a bad thing. Our human selves counter with nah.
The world is a better place without Taillefer.
