Officers were told two women had sustained serious injuries after a violent altercation with one of their partners, the police service said in a release.

A 32-year-old woman was found outside the residence with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries. She was transported to hospital by paramedics.

Inside the residence, police encountered a 63-year-old woman who had sustained what they believed to be multiple stab wounds. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased on scene.

Officers also located two children inside the residence who were not physically injured.

Officers cleared the residence and did not locate anyone else inside. It was believed the individual responsible for the attack fled prior to police arrival.

The alleged perpetrator was described as a 36-year-old black man, 5-foot-7, with short black hair and a beard, last seen wearing light-coloured shorts and a dark shirt. It was believed he sustained an injury to one of his legs during the altercation.

Police alerted the public and conducted a ground search with a canine unit.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m., officers located the man in a wooded area off Alder Street with injuries that appear to be self-inflicted. He was taken into custody without incident.

Due to the nature of his injuries, he was transported to Health Sciences North for medical treatment; however, he remains in police custody.

The man has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, forcible confinement, choking, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

As he required treatment, it has not yet been determined when he will attend bail court to answer to the charges.

Officers remained on the scene Wednesday, canvassing the area for information and video surveillance footage. Officers have applied for and been granted a search warrant for the residence.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact police at 705-675-9171.
