Delta flight from Boston to Rome diverted after diarrhea disaster

Well, that was a pretty crappy reason for diverting a transatlantic flight.

Literally.

A Delta flight from Boston to Rome, Italy last Friday was forced to turn around about an hour after takeoff and diverted to JFK airport in New York due to a “customer medical issue en route,” an airline spokesman told the New York Post without elaborating.

@OnlyInBoston, a social media account on X, however, flushed the theory that it was a medical issue, instead saying the diversion was a result of a “passenger who had severe bouts of diarrhea all over their seat.”

The Delta Airbus A330 landed at JFK and the 281 passengers were transferred to another plane. The poopy plane resumed service 20 hours after the, uh, accident, presumably after a thorough cleaning.

Delta has since addressed the incident aboard the plane.

“Delta apologizes to our customers for the delay in their travels from Boston to Rome on Friday night,” the airline said. “We thank them for their patience as the aircraft diverted to New York-JFK before continuing to Rome early Saturday morning.”

It isn’t the first time Delta has been affected by wayward bowel movements.

A year ago, a flight from Atlanta to Barcelona, Spain was forced to turn around and made an emergency landing after a passenger leaked diarrhea down the aisle.

“This is a biohazard issue,” the pilot declared to air traffic control, according to the Post. “We’ve had a passenger who’s had diarrhea all the way through the airplane, so they want us to come back to Atlanta.”
