A couple in California who needed to make change to pay for their pizza ended up with a delicious pie — and $1 million.
McKinley Nelson, 72, and his wife only had a $100 bill but wanted to break it for a tip so they went to a nearby store — and chose to purchase a pair of $10 Loteria Grande scratchers to get change.
“I had a $100 bill,” Nelson recounted to the California Lottery while picking up his winnings.
“I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching.”
As he continued scratching away, Nelson recalled telling his wife, “I think this one’s a million, but I’m not sure.”
The retired veteran confirmed the win on his California Lottery app, much to his wife’s shock.
“So, my wife almost had a heart attack and then we had to go in and buy the pizza,” he said, crediting his wife with the win.
“It was all because of her, she’s the one that likes the pizza.”

He said he and his wife plan to use the winnings to pay off their home and buy a camper van to drive across the country visiting with family.
Nelson added that he has been playing the state lottery since its inception in 1985.
“It took a long time to win,” he said with a laugh.
