'I KNOW PUTIN TOO WELL': Dennis Rodman plans to go to Russia to get Brittney Griner released

Dennis Rodman is ready to fight for Brittney Griner’s freedom.

The former NBA star is planning to head to Russia and seek the release of the WNBA player, who was sentenced to nine years in prison by a Russian court on drug charges earlier this month.

“I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl,” Rodman told NBC News. “I’m trying to go this week.”

He added: “I know Putin too well.”

However, the White House isn’t exactly keen on Rodman’s heroic attempts, with one government official telling the outlet he will likely do more harm than good.

“It’s public information that the administration has made a significant offer to the Russians and anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder release efforts,” the official said.

Griner’s attorneys are planning to appeal the verdict but the U.S., meanwhile, entered negotiations to potentially release Griner and another American prisoner, Paul Whelan, in exchange for Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

It won’t be the first time Rodman fancied himself an unofficial diplomat of sorts, forming friendships with international leaders who have tenuous relationships with the United States.

Rodman has called North Korea’s Kim Jong Un “an awesome kid” and his “dear friend for life,” even helping secure the release of American prisoner Kenneth Bae in 2014.

That same year, the former Chicago Bulls player met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in 2014, saying he is a “cool guy.”
