According to the New York Post, the women Rex Heuermann allegedly killed had gone missing when his wife Asas Ellerup and their two children were travelling, with the possibility of him luring the victims to his Massapequa Park, Long Island home.
A source told The Post that authorities have a theory that killing the women at his home would have given Heuermann a controlled setting where he could dispose of the bodies without being seen.
This combination of undated image provided by the Suffolk County Police Department, shows Melissa Barthelemy, top left, Amber Costello, top right, Megan Waterman, bottom left, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes. Authorities on Long Island are vowing to continue investigating a string of killings known as the Gilgo Beach murders after charging an architect in the deaths of three of the 11 victims. He is also considered the prime suspect in the death of another woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. (Suffolk County Police Department via AP)AP
“Investigators who think he committed it in his house say it would make sense because no one was home,” the police source told the publication. “He had all the time in the world, and it would be easier to remove the bodies in a burlap bag from his home than a hotel where someone might see him.

“One problem proving this is that he choked the victims to death, so there was no blood. If he shot or stabbed them, they would probably find some from the victims.”
The source noted no victim DNA has been found in the home and there’s no proof Heuermann allegedly killed them there.
Cops are currently still searching the family home for evidence. They did find tape and burlap bags at the crime scene.
The Manhattan-based architect is accused of killing Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman and Melissa Barthelemy — three of the four victims whose remains were found in Gilgo Beach, N.Y. in 2010. Heuermann is also suspected of killing a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, who disappeared in 2007.
News 12 reported investigators believe at least one of the women was killed in Heuermann’s home.
Cops claim cellphone records and surveillance footage showed the women trekked to the area of Heuermann’s home around the time they went missing.
The accused killer’s wife filed for divorce less than a week after his arrest.
