Toronto resident Nicholas Bello, who had just spent some time with his wife on a cruise ship in Florida, was on his way back to the city earlier this week when things became chaotic at the airport in Ft. Lauderdale.

Bello said Air Canada mismanaged the return flight for passengers and the airline had to call local police to deal with the agitated travellers Monday evening.
“@AirCanada fumbling the ball so badly with Fort Lauderdale flights (Sunday/Monday),” he shared on X, formerly Twitter. “Now they brought in cops to try and quell the understandably upset travellers.”

Bello explained that Air Canada announced delays to Sunday’s flight and kept travellers waiting at the airport until the airline announced the flight’s cancellation at 1 a.m. on Monday.
“Some people (have0 been sleeping at (the) airport since very early yesterday,” he wrote.

He had to book a hotel stay due to the delays and paid for meals and taxis to and from the airport.
The couple returned to the airport for the rebooked flight on Monday, but it was delayed again. His plane didn’t leave Florida until approximately midnight that day.
Hours later, after arriving home, Bello shared a snap of his alarm clock just before 4 a.m.

Although the return trip left a bad taste in his mouth, Bello said Air Canada was apologetic and made amends on Wednesday.
“OK, so @AirCanada took some steps to make this better,” he wrote. “Wife and I each got $650 vouchers for future travel. So we’re still out for the $300USD unplanned hotel stay + taxis and meals but this helps a bit.”
He added the travel experience “could be a good argument for travel insurance next time.”
