But in the intervening years, conspiracy theories about the well-heeled and well-connected sex trafficker have found fertile ground.

Suspicions about his sordid death in a Manhattan jail cell and suspicions of who was on his roster of perversion in that infamous little black book have not died. Epstein, 66, at the time his train rolled in, wasn’t hanging out with Bob the perverted plumber.

With malevolent muse Ghislaine Maxwell, he only interacted with the upper crust of business, politics, society and Hollywood.

Now, we may never know for sure who had underage sexual interactions with the small army of underage girls who the pair sex-trafficked around the planet.

On Friday, the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice said that Epstein committed suicide and that his “client list” does not exist. It is all rather convenient. Nothing to see here, folks, it’s done and dusted.

Epstein’s family and others claimed the fiendish financier did not kill himself. The argument was that his death was made to look like a suicide, but was in reality murder. The motive was to silence the convicted sex offender forever.

And there would have been good reasons for fear. Epstein’s properties from New York to the Caribbean were wired to the eyeballs, recording the illicit sexual activities of famous men. The recordings would be Epstein’s insurance policies.

They could be used to extricate hefty favours and hopelessly compromise other participants in the pedophilic merriment.

Epstein was arrested in July 2019 and charged with sex trafficking. One month later, he was dead.

The feds insist the suicide verdict was the correct one and that CCTV reveals that no one entered Epstein’s cell until he was discovered dead. I can buy this, reluctantly, but I can be persuaded that Epstein took himself off the board.

Harder to believe is the feds’ contention that Epstein and Maxwell hadn’t blackmailed “prominent individuals” and that there was no “client list.” This is a stretch. Epstein, having the freedom to sexually abuse underage girls, needed a bodyguard of lies and a mountain of compromising information.

There will be no “further disclosure” of Epstein’s vile crimes. The feds argue that they don’t want to release sickening child pornography or details of the victims, for their protection, of course.

Few can argue with that, but it seems there may be ulterior motives for keeping a lid on further revelations. No one involved in the maze-like Epstein probe will go to jail, they said.

Only Epstein’s second banana, muse, girlfriend and fellow sex abuser, Ghislaine Maxwell, will see the inside of a jail cell. She’s currently serving a 20-year sentence at a federal prison in Florida for sex trafficking.

His contact list, compiled by the gruesome twosome, is heavily redacted.

When you have bold-faced names like Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Bill Gates and other political and business powerhouses in the mix, questions will be asked. None of the above have been convicted of any crimes or proven to have engaged in wrongdoing.

The outlier is Prince Andrew. For some reason, he paid late Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre $20 million in an out-of-court settlement. One does not randomly cough up that kind of cash out of the goodness of one’s heart.

The Jeffrey Epstein affair will take its place among the pantheon of great American mysteries.

The feds may believe they’ve closed the book on Jeffrey Epstein. What they’ve done is take a can of gasoline and pour it on the fire.
