Apple posted the guide, which can be used if an iOS 17 update is downloaded, on X (formerly Twitter), sparking outrage from users who think the move is too “woke” and unnecessary. The update adds a dedicated field for pronouns in the Contacts app.
“Oh can’t believe. Steve Jobs would die again if he saw this,” wrote one user on X.
“Too ‘woke’ Apple far too ‘woke,” wrote X user Ellie G.
“What a waste of an update and anyone’s time to create,” wrote another user.
The update has left some users angry enough to no longer buy Apple products or to stop accepting calls from anyone who uses pronouns in their contact information.
One user questioned by Apple was “pushing this” while adding that he didn’t have “friends with pronouns.”

“Another reason to leave Apple and go to Samsung,” wrote an X user, while another joked, “Who wants to buy my iPhone 14?”
One person on X commented that seeing pronouns show up on an incoming phone call would help him decide if the call would be accepted.
“As soon as I see someone list their pronouns in their bio, its a no from me,” the commenter said.
That sentiment was backed up by another X user.
“(It) makes it easy to decide who to decline calls from to be honest,” Masquerade Fitzgerald wrote.
It’s not the first time iPhone users have balked at an iOS update. Last year people were left fuming after Apple added a “clean energy charging” option that slows down charging when sustainable energy is unavailable.
