Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi’s recent mysterious retirement is making more sense now, according to the New York Post.
Giorgi is believed to have fled to the U.S. and is wanted by Italian authorities for alleged tax return gaps, says Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The report says members of Giorgi’s family are also under investigation, and she’s with her father and coach, Sergio, mother, Claudio, and brothers, Leandro and Amadeus in America.
Giorgi, 32, confirmed her retirement Sunday in a post on Instagram, where she has 750,000 followers.
She wrote: “To my lovely fans, I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years I cherish all the beautiful memories. There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead. It is a joy to share my life with you, and let’s continue this journey together. With much love, Camila.”
Giorgi, who has cut off contact with both the Women’s Tennis Association and the Italian Tennis Federation, is now focusing on a modelling career, according to Spanish outlet Marca.
She has posted photos in lingerie and swimsuits on her account recently, and has modelled in the past.
Her highest career ranking was 26th in the world in women’s singles in 2018 and she most recently lost to the planet’s top player, Iga Swiatek, at the Miami Open in March.
