Dr. Musharraf Hussain, a deputy lord lieutenant for the English county of Nottinghamshire, penned an opinion piece Wednesday describing his personal experiences whenever he is with the Royals.
Hussain, an Islamic scholar and translator of the Quran, says he is “intensely proud” of his Britishness and of his South Asian heritage.
“In the 10 years I have spent representing the Royal Family, they have been nothing but respectful of my background,” he writes in the New York Post. “The notion that they are racist is simply out of touch with reality.”
Although Hussain says he doesn’t want to belittle Meghan Markle’s experiences following her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey over the weekend, he is critical of her airing the family’s “dirty laundry” to a worldwide audience.

“Airing a family’s dirty laundry (and I am not sure how much laundry there really is) so publicly will not only injure the sensibilities of many Brits, but could be seen as an attack on family values,” he writes.
Hussain suggests to air grievances privately so as to support family members when there’s an issue at hand.
“I fear that all Ms. Markle’s actions will achieve is, ironically, to make the Royals more cautious when dealing with outsiders. And that will be a loss to us all.”
