LEDREW: How Justin Trudeau can still win the next election

“I guess Justin is in for a trouncing in the next election.”

I hear this every day, not just in the political and business circles I frequent, but in the cigar store, the hardware store, the beer store, the grocery store — everywhere.

Almost everyone thinks he has done a rotten job, and want him vanquished.

Some in Buckhorn hope that he does NOT resign before the next election, so that they can have the satisfaction of giving him a real boot in the rear end in an election — sorta like what happened to the Conservatives (a party of two) in the 1993 election — just to show him how much they hate him.

But not so fast, Speedy — here is the news: Justin could be back after the next election as prime minister!

Trudeau is no longer the childish and naive “Sunny Ways” darling that the leftist media loved — even he must know that “Canada is back” was just so much baloney.

And the women of Toronto tell me that they still love him, in spite of the corruption and incompetence.

So what must he do to gain a fighting chance?

Build a platform of common sense (a complete reversal — but his dad successfully reversed himself often).

Drop the antediluvian conceit that taxes can change the climate — it will be changing no matter what. Your policies are driving Canadians into poverty.

Dump his incompetent ministers. Granted, this might leave him with a cabinet of only five, but his caucus still has some sturdy wood that has been overlooked by his politically correct advisers.

Acknowledge that the Liberal Party had a purpose, was an institution before he trashed it for the sake of his ego, and bring back men and women who know how to govern, and solve problems. Senator David Smith and Bill Graham are no longer with us, but across the country are smart, experienced people whom Trudeau has not only ignored, but told to “beat it — I have this under control, by myself.”

And level with Canadians — admit that he has made mistakes, but is a far better prime minister now than in the first years, and will get better.

Who knows? He just might convince enough Canadians to win re-election — he is, after all, an outstanding campaigner.

And if the Tories contract a case of hubris, anything is possible.

For those readers who are now ready to flee the country in fear that Trudeau could indeed survive into another term, don’t despair. He won’t change, or do anything that would admit that he ever made a mistake — he’s toast.
