Canada Day is a time to kick back with family and friends. Maybe flip a burger or two and set off a few fireworks.

This year, it is especially meaningful, given the annexation threats and crippling tariffs imposed by our southern neighbour.

It’s a time for reflection and a time to celebrate what makes us great. There are those who would denigrate this land. They would rewrite this country’s history to fit their own dreary narrative. Yes, Canada has made mistakes, but not as many as other countries. We’ve erred, but we’ve sought to fix what went wrong. This country is a beacon of freedom in a world where it’s in short supply.

Through two world wars and the Korean conflict, Canada was on the right side of history. The fields of Europe are soaked in the blood of Canadians who died in the name of democracy. They recognized true fascism when they saw it. Their sacrifice ended the worst genocide of the 20th century.

Now, there are those who would take that freedom and weaponize it. They take to the streets wearing masks, waving the banners of hideous regimes and uttering slogans that seek to intimidate and demean those who don’t share their views. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy. Spewing hatred is not. People who participate in such divisive activities, day after day, week after week on our streets, demonstrate a lack of understanding of what real freedom is.

They misinterpret Canadian politeness for weakness. We may tolerate their aggression and carefully sidestep their protests to avoid confrontation, but we see them and we know what they’re about.

Around the world, Canada is respected as a peaceful country that respects a diversity of views. Our gifts to the world include insulin and the telephone. And yes, the Stanley Cup. Our courage is legendary, personified in people like Terry Fox, whose legacy still resonates. We have great musicians, from Glenn Gould to Gordon Lightfoot to Arcade Fire and Celine Dion. Our athletes are superb, from Wayne Gretzky to Summer McIntosh to our men’s Olympic relay team.

On Canada Day, we should see only one flag on our streets. It’s red and white and it has a maple leaf in the middle.

And we’re so proud to raise it.
