Silly. A waste of time. A petty farce.

Yes, the Ottawa bubble had its head fully up its you-know-what on Wednesday as we heard all the pearl-clutching drama about whether or not there’d be an election.
For most people listening in, it was probably all a bunch of procedural nonsense. For the most part, they’d be right.
When Prime Minister Justin Trudeau needlessly prorogued Parliament in the summer, he also shut down the committees, including the one proving the WE Charity scandal.
Now that Parliament is back up and running, the opposition parties have more questions on that file. As they should and as is their right.
The Conservatives put together a motion that would see the creation of a special committee that proved the WE saga further. The opposition was largely behind it, at least when it came to calling the government to account. And because the Liberals don’t have a majority, the opposition could easily vote to make this committee a reality.

For whatever reason though, the Liberals were aghast at this idea. The thing is, that committee would have the ability to call for documents and summons witnesses, including Trudeau.
They didn’t want this so they flipped things around to make the vote a confidence motion – which it normally wouldn’t be. That meant if the motion to form the committee passed, there wouldn’t be a vote, there’d be an election – because the passing of the motion would topple the government.
What are the Liberals hiding? Maybe nothing. Maybe something. Something big.
Regardless, afraid of the prospects of an election, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh dodged first in Trudeau’s game of chicken. Singh pulled the plug on his MPs voting for the motion, so it didn’t go ahead.
It’s simply shameful of the Liberals to play such a game.
What really matters to Canadians right now is this incredibly unprecedented time we are living through, with the struggles of the pandemic and all the shutdowns and inconsistent rules that come with it.
That’s what we need government and the politicians focused on right now. Instead, they all chose to play this silly game.
